Eco-friendly ways to unblock a drain

Plunger

The plunger is a simple, effective, and inexpensive tool that has been used for generations to safely unblock drains. To use a plunger, simply fill the sink or basin with enough water to cover the cup of the plunger, place the plunger over the drain, and pump it up and down several times. The suction from the plunger will help to loosen and remove the clog, allowing the water to drain freely.

Boiling water

Boiling water is a quick and easy method for unblocking drains that is safe for both you and your pipes. Simply boil some water, then pour it down the drain. The hot water will help to dissolve any grease or soap scum that may be blocking the drain, and it will also kill any bacteria that may be present. Repeat the process as many times as you need to to break up the clog.

Baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are natural, non-toxic ingredients that are highly effective for unclogging drains. Simply mix equal parts baking soda and white vinegar in a bowl, then pour the mixture down the drain. The baking soda and vinegar will react and form a fizzing action that will help to break down the blockage. Let the mixture sit in the drain for several hours, then rinse with boiling water.

Drain snake

A drain snake is a long, flexible rod with a spiral end that can be used to clear clogs in drains. Drain snakes are safe for both you and your pipes, and they can be an effective solution for more stubborn clogs. To use a drain snake, insert the spiral end into the drain and turn the handle to feed the snake down into the pipe. The snake will help to loosen up any gunk and allow the water to drain freely.

When to call a Plumber

If the blockage remains after trying the methods above, it might be time to call a plumber. A plumber will have the tools and expertise needed to clear the clog safely and effectively, and they can also help to identify and repair any underlying problems that may have caused the clog in the first place.
