Common reasons for a leaking tap
Worn-out washers
One of the most common reasons for dripping is a worn-out washer. The washer is a small, circular piece of rubber or metal that sits inside the tap handle to create a watertight seal. Over time, the washer can lose its durability and become worn, enabling water to leak through. If you have an older tap, it’s possible that the washers have simply worn out over the years of use. Replacing the washers is a relatively cheap and easy fix that can be carried out in a few minutes.
Loose parts
Another common cause of a dripping tap is loose parts. The handles on your tap are connected to various mechanisms inside, and if these parts become loose, water can seep through. This is usually the result of where and tear over time, however, if your tap is relatively new, it’s possible that it wasn’t installed properly and needs tightening.
Corrosion
If the tap in question is quite old, corrosion could be the culprit. Corrosion happens when the metal begins to break down due to exposure to water and air. Over time, the corrosion can cause small holes to form which water can leak through. If this is the case, replacing the whole tap may be required.
High water pressure
Although having high water pressure is great, it can actually cause the seals and washers inside your tap to wear out more quickly, leading to leaks. If you have high water pressure in your home, consider installing a pressure regulator to reduce the pressure and extend the life of your plumbing fixtures.
Broken cartridge
If you have a single-handle tap, a broken or worn-out cartridge may be the cause of the dripping. The cartridge is a small part inside the tap handle that controls the flow of water. Replacing the cartridge can solve the problem, but this can be a more complicated fix than simply replacing washers and may require a plumber.
Hard water
If you live in an area with hard water, a build-up of mineral deposits can lead to dripping. Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which over time, can build up and clog the small openings in your plumbing fixtures, causing leaks. If hard water is the cause of your dripping, you may need to clean your fixtures or install a water softener to prevent further build-up.
